Founded in 2018, amass studio is an architectural design team that integrates multiple disciplines. Starting from small-scale architecture, interiors, and exhibition spaces, we bridge creative energy with professional execution.

Design can be more than a single discipline. With an open and experimental attitude, we focus on the connection between design and realization while exploring the possibilities of material application and architectural design through shifting perspectives.

We are delighted to have completed another space for Onland.

For this new location at XTD Galleria in Shanghai’s Xintiandi district, we continued the starting point established in the Tianmuli store: beginning from the idea of a workshop. The focus is less on how beautifully objects are displayed, and more on how they are used, touched, and repositioned in everyday interaction.

Facing a larger exhibition surface in the Xintiandi space, the interior was not divided all at once. Instead, it is gradually organized through a set of movable and reconfigurable display props. The fan-shaped display tables resemble both folding screens and temporary street stalls. They can fold and unfold, use different materials on each side, allow objects to hang or sit, and simultaneously serve as spatial dividers, display surfaces, and guides for circulation. Retail no longer relies on fixed cabinetry but behaves more like a street stall—continuously adjusting according to objects and their modes of use.

Cotton threads are introduced as a lightweight hanging system, descending naturally from the truss above. Small objects are suspended with simple knots, while concrete blocks act as counterweights, allowing the system to function without adding extra structural elements. These strategies are not about formal expression, but about translating everyday street intelligence—solving direct problems with the fewest possible materials.

The shelving system adopts standard industrial racks, combined with inserted white wooden cabinets to reorganize storage. This allows industrial scale and handcrafted sensibility to coexist. Rather than acting as a finished display system, the shelves remain a basic structure that can be continuously adjusted.

For this XTD store, we did not stop at the idea of “free placement.” Starting again from the workshop concept, we further developed a more refined and thoughtful system of props. These elements emerged from our growing familiarity with Onland’s products, allowing the space to remain flexible while becoming more specific and practical in everyday use.
