Kaitoumi is a restaurant serving street food from China’s Yunnan, Guizhou, and Sichuan regions. Street food is typically immediate and communal, yet often overlooked. The design draws from this street experience and translates the everyday dining scene into an interior space.
Entering the restaurant feels like stepping into a small alley. Rather than recreating a literal street setting, the space uses structure and spatial interfaces to suggest the rhythm of moving through an alley. Four H-shaped steel beams establish the spatial order, while columns, custom concrete brick low walls, and translucent partitions create boundaries that remain open yet subtly enclosed. The open kitchen is integrated into the dining area, allowing cooking to be visible and preserving the lively atmosphere of street food.
The material palette follows a modest and durable language. Terrazzo flooring extends onto the walls, while square tiles and concrete bricks form the base surfaces. The “mi”-shaped ceiling light references the restaurant’s name, with custom fiberglass shades creating a soft diffused glow. Blue ramie fabric wall lamps introduce a restrained touch of southwestern color.
